— Marty Rutberg

Marty Rutberg, Richard Greenblatt and Larry Breslow, Personal Injury Lawyers in New York

In the third decade of his successful career, Marty Rutberg founded the personal injury law firm of Rutberg Personal Injury Law in 1999 with the single goal of helping injured people and their families. Given the fine reputations and 60 years combined experience of the firm's core personal injury lawyers, the firm was immediately recognized as an established and respected member of the legal and business communities of the Hudson Valley, Mohawk Valley, Catskills and elsewhere throughout the state of New York.

In order to better serve the firm's many clients in the Catskill region, Mr. Rutberg soon expanded the firm to include offices at Monticello, where the firm's regional counsel add an additional 50 years of combined experience to the firm's resources. With increased caseload in the Mohawk Valley area, the firm has opened offices in Utica, New York.

We help injured people and their families throughout the state of New York. If you have been injured by the negligence of others, please contact us at our offices in Poughkeepsie, Catskills, or Mohawk Valley.

Attorney Profiles

Marty Rutberg, Rutberg and Associates

Marty has been practicing law for over 29 years, the first of which were spent outside personal injury law. But after winning a large personal injury verdict for a client with permanent brain injuries, Marty realized that his calling was in helping injured people and their families. That’s where his passion has remained, ever since.

This is an attorney with an impressive portfolio of verdicts and settlements, each with its own interesting and compelling human perspective. He also has impeccable professional credentials, including service as President of the Dutchess County Bar Association, receipt of the Martin Luther King Award for Community Service, membership in the Amercian Board of Trial Advocates and in the American Association for Justice. But what gives Marty a unique presence and effectiveness is the way his personal and professional lives merge to create a unique legal personality.

Back in his college years, Marty initially saw himself working in forestry. He soon turned to political science and the law but never lost his affinity for the outdoors. He is a lifelong mountain hiker and canoe traveler who regularly journeys solo. He believes that his time “outside and alone” gives him an edge in presenting his cases. Once you speak with him and see him work, you believe it too.

As Marty describes it, “There is some kind of synthesis between the skills and experience of wilderness travel and my professional style, especially in the courtroom. Both involve sustained physical output, along with a calmed mind and opened senses. Both require that you constantly see the big picture, yet quickly identify important details. It¹s not exactly thinking. It is more of a spontaneous seeing of things as they are and taking them as they come. Lots of people can learn the rules of law. My inner experience in wilderness somehow gives me the ability to absorb a case and to embody my client’s experience. That allows me to be extremely effective in communicating
the case to others. That communication is the purpose of my professional existence.”

Critical thinking and the ability to make correct decisions under pressure are also paramount to success, whether in the wilderness or in presenting a case. Marty’s refined perception, analysis
and judgment are his guides in the complex world of injury law. That makes him a formidable opponent both in and out of
the courtroom.
Though he works in a people-intensive profession, he enjoys spending time in solitude sometimes, even in isolation. It is in quiet meditation, on one of his expeditions, that Marty can choose to think deeply or not at all. He explains: “Deep thought helps me solve a specific legal problem. Not thinking at all clears my mind, so that I can embrace the mindset of a problem solver”.

To a great degree, Marty is the product of his upbringing. He grew up in a modest home in a blue-collar environment. He has never forgotten his roots and the need to protect the rights of people from all walks of life, especially those who have been hurt by someone else’s negligence.

Marty believes that “in your heart, you are either an attorney for injured plaintiffs or for defendants. You can’t play both sides without being phony. A plaintiff’s lawyer is a people’s lawyer. The defense is mostly about protecting insurance company profits”.

Marty Rutberg is comfortable in his commitment to the side of the plaintiff. He is proud to lead one of the few firms that represents only injured people and their families. This lawyer sees himself as a navigator of the system, a person who knows how to honestly make the law and the courts work for his clients. In the end, it¹s not about the bragging rights that come with the settlements: It’s about getting his clients what they need in case after case.

If you live in the Hudson Valley, the Catskills or the Mohawk Valley, chances are that you have heard Marty Rutberg on the radio. There are few who don’t recognize his voice and his message. He is the champion of everyday people with serious injuries.

When Marty says he is going to get you fair compensation, you believe it. So do his adversaries. Marty is combines tenacity and compassion in a style that achieves great results for his clients. His reputation is impeccable. He’s the guy with the intelligence and instincts necessary to lead you through the legal woods... or any woods for that matter.

Richard Greenblatt, Rutberg and Associates

As the firm's Senior Staff Counsel, Richard Greenblatt adds great intellectual prowess and 26 years of experience to the firm's arsenal. His extensive professional history began in 1978, when he graduated J.D. Cum Laude from Brooklyn Law School and was admitted to practice in New York.

Talented in legal scholarship as well as advocacy, Mr. Greenblatt worked in areas including legal ethics, civil rights, rights of the accused and family law during the first two decades of his service. But he returned to the representation of injured people time and again.

When Rutberg Personal Injury Law opened in 1999, Richard Greenblatt was the head of his own firm. Determined to include Richard on his team of seasoned professionals, Mr. Rutberg extended an offer that he could not refuse—the opportunity to focus on personal injury law and nothing else. The rest is history. Richard Greenblatt is a valuable asset of Rutberg & Associates, proudly serving victims of personal injury throughout New York.
